Fish & Bird ~

Fish & Bird are Canada’s alt-folk force to be reckoned with, and their latest album, Every Whisper is a Shout Across the Void, has earned them critical acclaim through Canada, the US and the UK.  The band pushes just the right amount of alternative music into their folk base, creating a sound all their own that’s both indie and traditional. It’s both clean sounding and complex, as well as provocative and harmonious.

Since the release of Every Whisper is a Shout Across the Void, Fish & Bird’s third release, the band has performed to a sold-out CBC studio audience for a nationwide broadcast on television and radio, and showcased at the Intl. Folk Alliance Conference in 2011 and 2012. Every Whisper… was the top most played album on the Galaxie Folk/Roots Radio channel for 2011 and was nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award (Roots Group Recording) in both 2011 and 2012. Following the release the band toured hard from Vancouver Island to PEI to the Yukon, playing festivals, clubs, and house concerts. In 2012 Fish & Bird opened up the show on St. Patrick’s Day for Spirit of the West at Vancouver’s famous Commodore Ballroom, and then set off on tour for six months, which saw them play such notable shows as Winnipeg Folk Festival, Folk on the Rocks, Kispiox Music Festival, and Deep Roots Music Festival among many other shows.  Fish & Bird continue to travel across North America with an extensive touring schedules, and are working to record a new album during winter 2013. Have a listen, see them live, and you’ll see what all the buzz is about.

The project began in Victoria, BC in 2006 as an acoustic duo, comprised of Taylor Ashton (banjo, guitar, vocals) and Adam Iredale-Gray (fiddle). On their 2007 self titled debut, their take on ‘folk’ included original songs in odd time signatures and traditional murder ballads with rock beats. 2009′s Left Brain Blues was a more mature exploration of the space between folk traditions and reckless creativity, with Ashton & Gray playing multiple instruments on each song, toying with formats that inspired them. Some of the friends they enlisted as sidemen became permanent members of the band, making Fish & Bird the five-piece indie-folk powerhouse we know today. They have weird vocal improv sections, they rock out in 11/8, sometimes it seems like they’re playing bluegrass, and they might make you cry.
