“Empowering and inspiring BC’s youth through access to music and music education”

Music BC Charitable Foundation supports music education throughout British Columbia by providing band and orchestral instruments to underfunded music programs in public schools, Aboriginal schools, community centres, and regional youth orchestras; scholarships for young artists pursuing a career in music, and mentor-based music programs for at-risk youth.

What began in 2004 as a modest charitable arm of Music BC Industry Association, has developed into one of the most active and successful champions of music education in British Columbia! In the last 5 years, the Foundation’s flagship program “Adopt an Instrument”, has provided over 18 schools and youth music programs with more than $100,000 in new band instruments, thanks to a dedicated staff, volunteer base, corporate funders such as TELUS, Interior Savings Bank (Kelowna), and partners Long & McQuade, Tom Lee Music, and Gibson Canada. In 2013, MBCF will support 10 new music programs in school districts from Haida G’waii to Delta, 3 youth orchestras in Vancouver, Shuswap/Salmon Arm, and Prince George, while continuing to provide stewardship to all their recipients.

Other programs include The Burt Harris Memorial Scholarship; which has provided over $40,000 in scholarships and bursaries to talented youth who wish to pursue musical studies at the post-secondary level, and Songwriters of a New Generation (SONG); a mentor-based program that teaches basic songwriting skills to at-risk youth as a means of healthy expression.
