Fruit and Ash, The New EP from Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers

Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers emerge into spring with a brand new EP called Fruit and Ash; a four song collection that reimagines the human experience through the eyes of the natural world, specifically three insects and one fish. Full of the band’s signature chutzpah, the new EP glistens with brass, and soars with vocal musings, while grounding itself in an earthy, groovy vibe. Fruit and Ash is theatrical, visceral, and lush; it unfolds like a gypsy circus performance of wild animals, vivid colors and dramatic movement.

The band is touring throughout western Canada for the summer months, and the new EP will be available for purchase at shows, and through their Bandcamp page. Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers are also celebrating the release by giving away 2 free songs from the EP, go to their Website to collect your prize by signing up for the mailing list. You can also stream or purchase Fruit and Ash via Bandcamp.

Winnipeg’s favorite gypsy-jazz-orchestral outfit, Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers have been killin’ it on stage with original rock operas, old style crooning and a robust brass section since 2007. Their unique blend of jazz, folk and musical theater has been described as “Hawksley Workman meets Calexico” and “a gypsy version of Queen”, earning them a reputation as one of Canada’s must see acts.

“This outfit effortlessly blends jazz, pop, rock and folk to create a bombastic sound that has no shortage of swagger.”
Uptown Magazine

Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers released their debut full length album Hans My Lion in 2011, playing hundreds of shows in support of it, and selling out rooms in their hometown of Winnipeg. It earned 5 star reviews in several publications, and was described as “an album with no shortage of imaginative material that is bound to become a classic.” Hans My Lion also won the band the 2011 Nimbus Recording School’s showcase event, with the school’s instructor Futch commenting, “Not since the invention of the cell phone have I seen a room where EVERYONE was looking at the stage.” Dynamic and engaging, Flying Fox is powerful force, and a refreshing change to the dominant sounds in independent music today.

Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers first gained notice in 2010 with the debut of their original rock opera, The Wild Things, at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. Inspired by the iconic childrens story, Where the Wild Things Are, the show was embraced by children and adults alike, and received the prestigious “Best of Fest” award with over 1,200 tickets sold. Soundtrack music from the production was released as a concept album, and quickly sold out of its orginal 500 copies. Since then, the band has taken the concept to the musical stage, including appearances at The Big Timeout, North Country Fair, South Country Fair, Komasket Music Festival, Brandon Folk Festival, and the Winnipeg Jazz Festival. They’va had the pleasure of sharing the spotlight with acts as diverse as Elliot Brood, Black Mountain, Bahamas, Dan Mangan, Arrested Development, Five Alarm Funk, Fred Penner and The Waking Eyes.
