Petunia never stops. That’s just it – he’s a man on a mission, and whether solo or with The Vipers in full band splendor, audiences never leave a Petunia show feeling anything less than gobsmacked, happily sharing their testimony. He’s just been declared a favorite by each of the BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario festivals Petunia & The Vipers were on the bill for this summer, and one audience member recently described him as “Hank Williams on acid”.
The remainder of the summer will see the band returning to the Pacific Northwest, Petunia going solo across eastern Canada, and then another full band run through Canada’s west before returning home for an only-twice-a-year-all-out-perogy-extravaganza show at the elegant Ukrainian Orthodox Hall in Vancouver. This band surprises, elates, and changes people; don’t say you weren’t warned!
In 2013 Petunia has chalked up a Celtic Connections showcase, UK tour, and Folk Alliance showcase in Toronto with the band, a solo tour of western Canada, band tour down the US west coast, composing music for “Dancing on the Edge” dance festival in Vancouver, this summer’s festival tour, and somewhere in there managed 3 feverish nights of tracking alt-country twang, rock ‘n roll, eastern flavors, romance, the strange, and even a few never-heard numbers, for an exciting new record, to be released next year. It’s chock full of heavy-hitting players, and promises to be even more awesome than it’s critically acclaimed predecessor.

Imagine that David Lynch and Nick Cave had a hillbilly baby, that yodeled…or Tom Waits meets Elvis at Woody Guthrie’s hobo junction. With a piercing gaze, he looks into the collective soul of the audience, then launches into some high and lonesome vocals that conjure up the ghost of Jimmie Rodgers. With his hillbilly tinted-swing inflected-ragtime-goodtime-thunderously rolling-you-don’t-want-to-miss-this-sort-of-a-show, PETUNIA is a Canadian treasure joining the greats from north of the 49th.
