A Creative Tribute to Leonard Cohen by Tower of Song (Canadian Duo Glenna Garramone and Oliver Swain)
Canadians and folks from all over the world cherish the songs of Leonard Cohen, and perhaps the most evident dedication of appreciation is through playing his songs. Covering Cohen’s works is a task not easily completed due to his own unique approach to music, but Victoria-based songwriters and musicians Oliver Swain and Glenna Garramone were up for the challenge, forming the duo Tower of Song. The two share a love of the renowned Canadian songwriter and possess an undeniable musical chemistry that compliments their impressive voices and multi-instrumental talents. The result of all this glorious meshing is a collection of music that will surprise and delight both music fans and Cohen fans especially; In City and In Forest, releasing officially April 22, 2014.
Celebrating the release of their debut recording, Tower of Song are hitting the road across western Canada this spring, introducing their sound to the country. The road isn’t new for either of them, and though Swain has earned a name for himself through several successful folk bands and his acclaimed solo project, Garramone is no stranger to the road; having lived in everywhere from Nunavut to Hawaii, and crossed the continent several times on tour with her own solo project. The duo will perform their reimagined covers, such as Swain’s live show favorite “A Thousand Kisses”, and Garramone’s unique “Hey That’s No Way to Say Goodbye” as well as originals of their own that are Cohen-inspired. Joining the duo on tour will be cellist Corbin Keep, as well as a selection of local artists who will share their own Cohen covers with audiences at many of the Tower of Song shows.

Hank Williams hasn’t answered yet
But I hear him coughing all night long
A hundred floors above me, In the Tower of Song”
When Leonard Cohen sings these words, the Tower of Song is a metaphor for the inspiration that flows between songwriters, each toiling away on their own, but connected by their shared craft. Moved by this concept, celebrated BC singer-songwriters Oliver Swain and Glenna Garramone, collaborated to produce a project that is a dialogue through song and a tribute to the legendary songwriter. Reimagining both rare and classic works of Cohen, the duo have crafted a sound that resonates with both longtime Cohen fans and a younger audience.

Tower of Song began as a one-off tribute night for a packed house at Vancouver’s The Media Club, and has since grown into an actively touring folk duo. Swain and Garramone together as Tower of Song have arranged some of Cohen’s timeless songs beautifully, and encouraged by the response, they continued to present the show regionally. After several sold-out shows on Vancouver Island and a successful tour of BC and Alberta, Tower of Song put “more power in the tower,” recording their debut album In City and In Forest, with Juno award winning producer Joby Baker.
The artists trade songs on the album, with Swain’s multiple octaves taking the lead on True Love Leaves No Traces, Baby in the Bay, Stranger Song, and A Thousand Kisses, while Garramone’s sweet and smooth voice takes care of Everybody Knows, Hey That’s No Way to Say Goodbye, Unicorn, Chelsea Hotel #2, and Take This Waltz. Each backs the other up with luscious harmonies, with both vocals shining unmistakably, and they accompany themselves with guitar, banjo, string bass and piano. Rounding out the recording are Joby Baker (drums/percussion), Richard Moody (violin/viola) and Quinn Bachand (guitar). In City and In Forest will be available on iTunes and CD Baby after it’s release and is currently available for pre-order on www.towerofsongmusic.com.
