Redgy Blackout is the cream of the up and coming indie roots-rock artists. Like every other band, they write songs, they sing and play instruments, and they tour the nation, but Redgy Blackout stands apart in their passion, and energy. With their latest EP released in July 2011, they are fast becoming one of the most popular bands in BC and western Canada, and the single “Bottom Of The Sea” is spinning on The Peak 100.5FM in Vancouver as well as the rest of the tracks being played on the radio/CBC across Canada. They have it all going for them; a roots-rock cabaret with vibrant and passionate vocals, incendiary guitar, impeccable banjo, maybe a little trumpet, and songs that are uplifting or lamenting, while some tell tragic tales of strange circumstance. It’s the kind of music you could spend the night dancing to, or set on repeat for that summer road trip.

“My first time seeing them…they completely knocked my socks off. This band is full of energy and their songs are engaging and at times incredibly humorous.”
Char, Vancouver Music Review

2011 saw Redgy Blackout hit the stage at the Harrison Festival for the Arts, play alongside the Kaslo Jazz Etc Festival, and more in addition to touring between. In the fall they placed in the top 20 at the Peak Performance Project, a collaborative educational contest put on by 100.5FM The Peak and Music BC in Vancouver. As part of their PPP tasks they raised hundreds from the sale of “When You Were A Kid” for donation to the BC Childrens Hospital Foundation. The band has also played the Harmony Arts Festival, the Deraylor Festival, and a slew of shows throughout western Canada. They’ve had all three releases heard on community and campus radio across the nation as well as CBC, and have enjoyed nothing but positive reviews from the critics. Redgy Blackout is creating a buzz to compare with the pace of their beautiful music!

After a summer of wild rides criss-crossing back and forth across the country, with a few different musicians, Jesse & Jacquie have added a new permanent member to the band! Welcome Matt Blackie, percussionist extraordinaire, who turned Jesse & Jacquie’s dynamic duo into a tremendous trio. As such, the band has taken on the task of coming up with a new name, and thanks to suggestions from the public and a Facebook Campaign, they’ve settled on a great one! BUT!! You don’t get to find out just yet, we want to build the anticipation!

The trio of Jesse, Jacquie and Blackie will be officially named upon the release of their new album, which is currently being recorded. It’s true, these folks only stay in one place long enough to record a new full length album, before they take off on another epic journey, this time through Canada’s west and north. Winter 2012 sees them playing shows in BC, Alberta, and into the Yukon and Alaska in March. It’s a great service these musicians do for all us fans, extending their playing field to include the far corners of the country, making sure fabulous times are had by all.

Their 2011 acclaimed album, Our Ghosts Will Fill These Walls, was released to rave reviews and enjoyed charting on !earshot across the country and well as hitting the CBC airwaves. The album is a rigorous exercise in roots rock, and this hard working and talented group are coming to the forefront of the Canadian independent music scene. Playing on familiar turf in January, the ferocious fivesome are being celebrated for their break-out release this year. The band was also the proud recipient of a nomination for Roots Group Recording of the Year at the 2011 Western Canadian Music Awards. In January 2012 the band are taking an opportunity to get together and play some shows on the west coast, so don’t miss them!

Fish & Bird are Canada’s alt-folk force to be reckoned with and their latest album, Every Whisper is a Shout Across the Void, marks a major step forward for the band. Released in April 2011, the critically acclaimed and nominated album redefines the Fish & Bird experience once again. It pushes just the right amount of alt music into their folk base, creating a sound all their own that’s as familiar as it is new. They have weird vocal improv sections, they rock out in 11/8, sometimes it seems like they’re playing bluegrass, and they might make you cry.

“blown away by their talent…they deftly transition from bluegrass to pop, from hauntingly sparse arrangements to full blown orchestration.”
John Mann, Spirit Of The West
2011 cemented Fish & Bird’s place in Canada’s music scene and introduced them to an international audience. In February, the band performed to a sold-out CBC studio audience for a concert broadcast nationwide on television and radio. They performed an official showcase at the International Folk Alliance Conference, and will return again as official showcasers in 2012. Starting in April 2011, they toured hard from Vancouver Island to PEI to the Yukon, playing festivals, clubs, and house concerts. The album picked up a Western Canadian Music Award nomination, and in October the band traveled to Whitehorse to play at the awards ceremony and the associated BreakOut West music festival.

A Postcard from the Darkest Highways…

The first time I heard Jeff Andrew play, it was from behind a closed door and I was quietly eavesdropping. I liked the song he was playing so much I asked him right away if he wanted to work together, and he agreed. Little did I know the rabbit hole I had fallen into, full of faeries, shadowy alleys and worn out old boots…

Jeff Andrew is a different breed of folk musician, aptly referring to his music as “folk noir”, with its boot-stompin’ grit, fantastical stories, and wailing banshee sound. He’s emerging from under a bridge somewhere in East Vancouver, to tour the country with latest release Hobo Postcards, his third recording and second full-length effort. Andrew will play from Vancouver to Winnipeg in November, having toured through Ontario after attending the OCFF Conference in Niagara Falls, and will return to the east again in the spring.

“A wordsmith and poet…Andrew has harnessed his muse on hobos, heartsick pilgrims and the demons left on the highway.”
Americana UK

Jeff Andrew’s story is one of wild wonder; back alleys and dark shadows, highways and hauntings. His psyche translates into his music, and Andrew takes his cue from folk punk bands like The Devil Makes Three and Graveyard Train to make his shows as rowdy as possible. He frequently works straight from the floor, stomping his boots and belting like a born-again carnival barker. Pounding his guitar strings or chopping and sawing away at the fiddle while singing either solo or with a band, he never fails to impress and leaves audiences shaken, sweating and ready for more.

“The addition of drums and electric guitar adds some more drive to Andrew’s exploration of the fantastical and familiar…”

Shade Tree Records is now releasing Andrew’s second full-length album, Hobo Postcards. Containing tales of haunted hotels (“Prince George Hotel Room”), hard times on Skid Row (“The Wandering Dead”, “What’s Going On In The Alleyway?”) and love songs to the open road (“Please Let Me Sleep On Your Floor”), it melds into a unique take on folk, punk and Celtic music. Hobo Postcards was recorded in the basements and tunnels of East Vancouver with co-producer Corwin Fox (Wax Mannequin, Raghu Lokanathan), bass virtuoso Tobias Meis and ace percussionist Kenan Sungur. It marks a return to Andrew’s rock and roll roots with the addition of electric guitars and a full rhythm section, and features the legendary Stroh Violin, a rare, antiquated instrument with a resonator and a phonograph horn instead of a traditional wooden body, heard on tracks 2, 7 and 8.

Jesse Dee & Jacquie B are on a roll. A high-energy rock n’ roll journey across the airwaves and highways, with their acclaimed new album Our Ghosts Will Fill These Walls. They are a powerhouse duo playing an undeniably catchy brand of roots rock; one half gritty electric rock, and one half soulful and harmonious roots-pop, somewhere between The Band or The Grateful Dead, and Ani DiFranco or Luke Doucet. An exciting and permeating force from the stage, and well over 100 shows per year since 2008, Jesse & Jacquie have backed up many Canadian artists as band members in addition to their own performance. They have two prior studio recordings in their holsters, A Cross Pollination Of Service Station Scrawl (2008) and Greenhouse (2009).

“…warm, shuffling, attractively bruised sounds, located somewhere in the soulful middle ground between Leadbelly and Tom Waits.”
Andrea Mcquade, See Magazine

Charting in the national top ten on !earshot, Our Ghosts Will Fill These Walls will get your feet moving right away with its up-tempo rock n’ roll, and infiltrate your heart with sweet balladry like no other album has before. Telling stories of life in northern BC, “Wells” chops chords and cords with a funky beat, while “Looks Like We Got a Problem” is a full-on rock n’ roll dance party. “For The Moon” slows it down and sways gently with careful cello and understated tenor guitar and the juxtaposition continues with “The Tide Took Me (Pirate Ship)” combining spoken word with languid guitar flourishes and a foreboding jazz beat. “I’m Still Hot” kicks it out with a Vaudevillian themed ragtime sound. All in all, Our Ghosts is a sonically invigorating collection of music, and a giant step in the aural journey of its creators.

F&B also festival’ed the summer away across western Canada and autumn hasn’t slowed them down at all either. They’ll be showcasing the weekend before BreakOut West at the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals Conference (OCFF) in Niagara Falls, ON, before jetting off to Whitehorse (via Vancouver for a show) to be honored for their…

Every Whisper Is A Shout Across The Void has been receiving a lot of attention! Here’s a few examples:

“Fish & Bird is a band full of feeling, and this album is a shout worth hearing…” Roots Music Canada Review

“Fish & Bird are a new force to be reckoned with on Canada’s roots scene….” Driftwood Magazine Review (US)

“Fish & Bird is a band to watch…” Georgia Straight Review

“Lead singer Taylor Ashton has a rich, compelling voice…” Exclaim Magazine Review

“There is a lot to like here…This is a band and an album that begs for further exploration…” Victory Music Review (US)

“This is folk rock in 2011: peppered with enough experimentation to turn heads, but still true to its roots…” Grayowl Point Blog Review

“We can only hope they’re able to garner enough support in the United States to warrant a tour…” babysue.com Review (US)

The Yukon is the best kept secret in the Canadian music scene. Until now! The wild and diverse lands of the territory produce some of the most wild and diverse music, and Music Yukon is ready to showcase their talented membership, and welcome the music industry to Whitehorse with a style of their own. Music Yukon is placing ten showcasing or nominated artists and one industry nominee front and centre at this year’s BreakOut West. We invite you to take a bit of time to get to know each of these Yukoners in the profiles below. They are among the great up and comers in the independent scene, and with everything from rap to folk, there’s something in the Yukon for everyone, everywhere.

From the energetic and animated rock style of Speed Control to the sweet contemporary melodies of Diyet, the Yukon has bred a wide range of musical talents and attracted musicians of all types to its northern majesty (like Francophone rockers Soir de Semaine, and Scandinavian belle Sarah MacDougall), coming from far and wide to experience and soak in all this vibrant scene has to offer in life as well as music. There is a different feeling in the air when you’re in Canada’s North, a rejuvenating and inspiring feeling that infects its inhabitants. It’s a pioneer spirit, a desire to break new ground, and a uniting overtone of camaraderie in a challenging landscape.

Plus, the Yukon has a bustling infrastructure, supportive of their local talent in their achievements, which have received nominations for both creative and industry awards at the WCMA’s over several years. There are four nominations for Yukoners this year, which traverse the available categories from Solo Roots Recording (Kim Beggs) and World Recording (Matthew Lien) of The Year, to Agency of The Year (Magnum Opus Management) and the Multimedia Award (Kim Beggs again!). With a whole slew of venues, an engaged music industry association, funding organizations and industry movers and shakers, Yukon musicians and industry can and do cultivate their careers both at home and throughout the world.

Many of the artists from the Yukon tour both nationally and internationally, so even if you aren’t going to attend BreakOut West, follow the sounds out of the north and catch them in your own neighborhood as soon as you can.

Carefree and joyful is how a child’s life should be, so Vancouver’s Redgy Blackout are banding together with the BC Children’s Hospital to raise funds for sick kids. The band is donating all proceeds from the sale of their brand new, heartfelt song “When You Were A Kid” to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, and needs your contribution!

PAY WHAT YOU WANT, from $1 to $100 for the song and every penny will go towards their goal of $5000 by October 14th. The first 12 people to donate more than $25 will receive a free pass to Redgy Blackout’s Peak Performance Project Showcase at the RED ROOM in Vancouver, on Thursday, September 29th, or your choice of a signed Redgy Blackout EP if you can’t make the show. Purchases of the Redgy Blackout EP from the will also result in a donation to the Hospital Foundation. Help a sick kid and get introduced to some great new music in return.

“When You Were A Kid” can be purchased through Redgy Blackout’s Bandcamp site; it’s a song about how we should remember the joys of being a kid everyday, and live with an open heart. The BC Children’s Hospital takes care of over one million kids every year and is the only acute-care pediatric hospital in the province, so with the help of the charitable efforts of Redgy Blackout, we hope they’ll be able to continue to offering top notch care to the kids who need it.

KNOW REDGY BLACKOUT:
Current proud to be a Top 20 contender in the Peak Performance Project, the band just released their new self-titled EP, and are fast becoming one of the most popular bands in BC and western Canada, with the single “Bottom Of The Sea” spinning on The Peak 100.5FM in Vancouver. Singer and multi-instrumentalist Scott Perrie and guitar/banjo player Jeremy Breaks have been perfecting their collaborative craft since they met at an open jam in Vancouver. Both came from musical backgrounds, Perrie through the theatre and his grandfathers ’61 Gibson J45, and Breaks through growing up in his father’s music store in Prince George. Their musical vision came together with their 2009 debut, and Redgy Blackout are now producing their best material yet with their new EP, bringing a united focus and dedication to the music they create, and collaborating with top notch musicians.

Multiple Juno Award winner Bill Bourne released his brand new album Bluesland this summer to critical acclaim across the continent, garnering accolades from the media, industry and fans alike. If you know Bill, this comes as no surprise, considering his 30 year career in the Canadian and International music scenes. This fall, Bourne finds himself wandering through Canada and the US, continuing the musical journey and this time bringing along the band for the ride. Consisting of son Pat Bourne on lead guitar, Pa Joe on smooth jazz guitar, Moses Gregg on bass and Matt Blackie on drums, The Free Radio Band is joining Bill, his divine voice and distinct acoustic guitar sound, through a series of shows from Edmonton to Niagara Falls and the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals (OCFF) Conference, and down to New York for the North Eastern Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) Conference. The band is tight and the music is hot blues rock, how could one resist? They’re set up to rock the house, from Alberta to Ontario, and the Northeastern US back to the Midwest.

Bluesland, is an intense collection of rock, folk and country, soaked with an electric blues sound that gets deep into your pores. It was recorded ‘live off the floor’ in 3 days in April 2010 at Beta Sound Recorders in Edmonton, and marks a milestone in Bourne’s career, collaborating with his son Pat Bourne, who plays electric lead guitar on the album. It opens up with the retro rocky Deep Dark Woods, and wanders through to the ‘ballad with teeth;’ On The Sunny Side. The country punk two step Columbus Stockade Blues and a raw country blues rendition of Dylan’s Maggie’s Farm rock out against the jazzy Who’s Knockin?, while Daily Bread walks through the blues with a gospel request. The eight song recording is available for pre-sale at TrueNorthRecords.com, or at any of Bill Bourne’s live performances. In addition to Bill’s acoustic guitar and vocals, and his son’s lead, The Free Radio Band features Pa Joe on electric smooth jazz guitar (African Guitar Summit), Moses Gregg on bass (The Swiftys) and Miguel Ferrer on drums (Santiago, Chile). Bluesland was mixed by Joe Dunphy and mastered by Joao Carvalho at Joao Carvalho Mastering in Toronto.

Bill Bourne has soul. In everything the multiple award winner has accomplished over a 30+ year career, the common vein has always been his undeniable passion and dedication to his craft and his message. From world beat to blues, Cajun, to funk, flamenco to folk, Bill has crossed all boundaries, joining people in celebration and music with a message of togetherness and peace. A rocker at heart, Bill holds the ideals of the 60′s revolutionary music makers, the protesting punk rockers, the old country crooners, and the aboriginal music of nearly any culture, blending aspects of every sensibility into his own unique sound. From the release of his first album by Radio Canada International in 1982, Bill Bourne has toured the world either solo, or with such acts as Scotland’s Tannahill Weavers, Bourne & MacLeod, Tri-Continental, Eivor Palsdottir, Lester Quitzau, Madagascar Slim and Bop Ensemble. His music has charted across Europe and North America, and he took home a Danish Folk Music Award in 2006 with Eivor Palsdottir (producing and playing on the album), in addition to winning Juno Awards for the 1990 Bourne & MacLeod recording Dance and Celebrate, the 1993 compilation Saturday Night Blues and 2000′s Tri-Continental self titled recording. Bill continues to record, play and collaborate with an ever present passion, fervor and sense of peace, making him a respected and significant contributor to the Canadian music landscape.

The TEQUILA MOCKINGBIRD ORCHESTRA have recently created a lot of buzz. Though they’ve been a popular underground gypsy-ska-roots-grass band for some time, they’ve just reached the cusp of something different. They’re a bunch of completely unassuming guys, all truly genuine and the kind of people your grandmother refers to as “such nice boys”. But put them up on stage and get the chemistry going and suddenly you’ve got a pulsing, rich sound, emanating into the wildly dancing crowd. No joke. I’ve seen it. The boys of TMO are on the road this summer all over the damn place, from BC down the US west coast to California, to Manitoba, back to BC, back through the country all the way to Atlantic Canada, and down to Pennsylvania and Tennessee, back to Montreal and Toronto…. and so on and so forth. These gypsies know how to move across the country, and you’d be silly not to go have them move YOU!

Continuing the summer of criss srossing the continent, The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra are making giant strides these days. One of Canada’s most exciting young roots bands, their underground following is expanding to national awareness and both the public and the music business are taking note. Playing festivals and shows from BC, Alberta, Manitoba, the Maritimes, Montreal, Toronto, Tennessee and Pennsylvania in addition to shows through the US Pacific Northwest. With such an epic touring schedule, that continues to add shows, you’ll have no excuse not to catch this entertaining, full force group this summer, they are one definitely memorable show!

Contact ModMay Promotions for press opportunities with TMO or promotional copies of albums. Please list shows in your local events listings where possible.

“Perfect Saturday main stage act to get the entire crowd swinging and dancing…They simply love to play music and it shows!”
Robert McCourty, Islands Folk Festival

TMO delivers their brand of acoustic, high energy Gypsy-Ska-Roots-Grass with dedication and precision, keeping it exciting and generating dancing fans with every show. They’ve sold hundreds of albums at individual shows; 600 at Seattle’s FolkLife alone, and tend to always be that name you overhear someone saying “Did you see that band?” TMO attended the Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis, TN this past February and came away with several shows in areas of the US they’ve never played before, and a whole slew of new fans in the industry. Though they formed as band in British Columbia, and they have roots in both BC and Alberta, they tour often in the Pacific Northwest, one band member attends Berklee School of Music in Massachusetts, they’ve sold out shows in Montreal, and they bring out the party people in Toronto thanks to their appearances at two Buskers Festivals. 2011 surprisingly marks their first stops in Saskatoon and Winnipeg, where the band is sure to be as welcomed and enjoyed as anywhere else.

“The Blanche Album, is that most rare of records: a studio CD that manages to capture the fun of their high-energy onstage performances. They refer to their music as gypsy-ska-folk-grass, and unlike most other bands with eclectic roots like this, they actually pull off the different influences.”
Devon Leger, Victory Music Review (Seattle)

The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra released The Blanche Album in late 2009, and like true wandering gypsies, jiving with their eastern European, traditional and contemporary influences, they took the album on the road playing everything from sweaty dance clubs to sunny outdoor festival stages. TMO also actively donates their time and music to community events, fundraisers and awareness campaigns, as well as bringing fresh new bands in from the Pacific Northwest to Vancouver (or vice versa) to help expose them to new markets. Ian Griffiths (lead vox/accordion), Kurt Loewen (vox/guitar), Patrick McGonigle (violin), Peter Mynett (upright bass) and Paul Wolda (percussion) are a community oriented and ideological group, but really, they just want to make sure you have a fabulous time.

“Their infectious stage presence is an irresistible assault of crazed gypsy-ska-folk-grass mayhem!”
Ben Hood, New World Theatre

What happens when you put two lovely ladies in a giant hippie van and drive it across the Rocky Mountains? Well, the answer to that question remains to be seen, but Sarah Burton intends to find out as we (as in Sarah and myself, her publicist, Joelle) gas up Honey, my big old van, and aim it in a westerly direction, playing shows from Alberta to BC this August! Sarah takes care of the performance part, and she has that role easily in hand, with the sheer quantity of touring and playing this unstoppable musical force does each year. She’ll be coming off a stint of starring in the live production of “Hedwig and The Angry Inch”, and recently making a video for her song “Gravity” and i’ll be touring her through a string of shows between Mountain View Music Fest in Carstairs, AB, and FolkWest in Victoria, BC. Watch out for us on the road, you can’t miss Honey’s highway lumbering, and you’ll want to follow the addicting music that’ll be coming from within…

“A little folk, a little rock, a bit of blues and a lot of country…Mayflower features a steady flow of stories and tales sung with carefree vocals paired with sarcastic and witty lyrics.”
Xolisa R Jerome, The Spill Magazine

August 5-7: MOUNTAIN VIEW MUSIC FEST, Carstairs, AB (Tweener Set)
August 8: The Ironwood Stage & Grill, Calgary, AB
August 10: The Glue Factory, Canmore, AB
August 11: The Slice, Lethbridge, AB
August 12: Tin Roof Bistro, Blairmore, AB
August 13: Golden Taps, Golden, BC
August 15: Minstrel Cafe, Kelowna, BC
August 17: Cafe Deux Soliels, Vancouver, BC w/ Buffalo Swans & OK Sweetheart
August 19-21: FOLKWEST, Victoria, BC (Tweener Set)

She’s a rambler, a gambler, a lover and a fighter; and the adventurous sounds of Sarah Burton lure you onto her path, rolling with the steady pace of a train down the tracks and rocking like your favorite juke joint on a Friday night. Her soulful voice tells life’s tales with beauty, strength and weariness, and an ever-so subtle bit of sarcasm! She released her first full length album Mayflower this year to the welcoming public, after having marked such successes as having her music in the film “Cabin Fever 2″, opening for pop sensation Kate Voegele at Toronto’s Opera House, and having her song “Then Run Away”, be named Best Folk Song by Toronto Exclusive magazine in 2009. Mayflower is a powerful collection of alt-folk with country and rock rhythms; its driving acoustic sound is apparent in “How Good You Are” and “Gravity”, while the steel and electric guitars make their mark on “If This is a Sin” and “What To Bring”. Themes of travel, luck and love affairs are dispersed amid the collection, ranging from edgy and independent, to vulnerable, sweet and romantic. Accompanying the Mayflower release is a VIDEO for the album’s single “How Good You Are”, thanks to a grant from Videofact, and a follow-up VIDEO for the track “Gravity” is to be released very soon!
Oliver Swain is already a well known name in the North American folk music scene, and he eats, sleeps and breathes music, as is evident by his performance. With his pure, finely tuned vocals that have an astonishing range, and his undeniable skill behind a banjo or upright bass, Oliver grabs the attention of all who hear him, and holds it with his enormous sound and stature. He’s shone at the forefront of the WCMA nominated group Outlaw Social, held up the bottom end of The Bills, and did a stint with Louisiana’s popular Red Stick Ramblers. He’s won awards, supported many well known Canadian musicians, toured overseas with Juno winner Toni Childs, and spearheaded an effort to bring a folk festival back to his hometown of Victoria. Now, with his solo debut In A Big Machine, Oliver is wowing those who hear it with his stunning vocals, lulling banjo, and audacious upright bass, backed by the amazingly talented Big Machine band.

“It’s the Zen rock garden of American old-time music.”
Devon Leger, Hearth Music

In A Big Machine is a beautiful collection of five tracks of Oliver’s original music, coupled with a few heavy hitting traditional numbers, and Oliver’s 120 year old goat skin banjo take on Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire”. The album takes the experimental folk sound Oliver is known for, and weaves a personal and touching tone into it, showing his emotive writing and varied vocal pallet. In A Big Machine was co-produced by Adrian Dolan (The Bills, Rankin Sisters, Chieftains) with Oliver at Marlborough Studios, and boasts a slew of appearances from his contemporaries such as Jeremy Penner (The Wailin’ Jenny’s), Emma Beaton (Joy Kills Sorrow), Adam Dobres and Emily Braden to name a few. Its being spun regularly on Canadian radio including the CBC and has hit the airwaves in the US and Australia as well. Big Machine has charted on several Canadian stations from Victoria to Toronto and back, and continues to be a folk favorite among DJ’s and the media alike.

If you know me, you have a good chance of knowing that i’m crazy about HONEY. It’s my favorite food; my camper van is named Honey, and I have an assortment of different honeys in my cupboard at any given time. So, with the duo of Allen & Alexander and their “honey and wheat” harmonies, it conjures the image of a freshly baked, fluffy loaf of bread drenched in pure sweet honey joy, and i’m ALL OVER that. Allegory aside though, these lovely songbirds really will send you to heaven with their harmonies, and its been proven by the critical acclaim both their new releases have achieved. This summer Allen & Alexander tour around some of the best honey producing areas, namely BC and Alberta, where lush landscapes and prolific blooms not only attract the bees, but fun-loving folks as well! Catch them at a festival or show, and hear for yourself how sweet it is.

Jenny Allen and Leslie Alexander came clean across Canada this spring, with their “Dirty Laundry Dual CD Release Tour”, hanging their truths out to dry on stages across Canada, each releasing new albums to critical acclaim! Jenny’s “Blanket” and Leslie’s “Nobody’s Baby” received rave reviews from !earshot, NOW Magazine, Roots Music Canada and more, top ten on the roots charts in western Canada (Leslie’s album debuted at #1 in Kamloops), and spins across the country on CBC and community radio. Now, these two powerhouse performers are tossing in the next load, summer shows and fests across western Canada and a fall tour coming together in the east. Even those who are familiar with Allen and Alexander as individual artists, will be pleasantly surprised by the pairing; the two match up like a pair of socks, complimenting each other’s style and holding each other up with harmony vocals, guitars, washboard, harmonica and other assorted instruments, playing everything from flat-out folk-rock to more intimate fare.

“If this is the future of the Canadian music scene, I like it. Both Allen and Alexander are talented songwriters and performers. Some of their tunes are already in my regular iTunes rotation.”
~ CV News & Views

Jenny Allen and Leslie Alexander are an easy match. The Alberta-native songwriters first joined forces onstage singing with Jane Siberry on her famous 90′s hit “Calling All Angels”, and when the two decided to tour together in 2010, it became obvious they had an amazing chemistry. Complimenting each other in content as well as style, the women agree that that their set list, exchanged like a no-holds-barred heart-to-heart over a load of laundry, contains their most personal songs yet. Culled from their new records, Jenny’s Blanket and Leslie’s Nobody’s Baby; each produced by BCCMA/BCMIA Producer of the Year John Ellis (Be Good Tanyas, Jane Siberry, Barney Bentall), their songs cover everything from old times to fresh starts with the razorsharp songwriting and powerhouse performances their fans have come to expect.

A New EP, Top 20 in the PPP and Summertime Plans

Vancouver’s Redgy Blackout are a unique band. Its hard to pinpoint their sound down to one category, but regardless of genre, people really like it! Evidenced by their current ranking as one of the Top 20 Bands in the Peak Performance Project, which comes at the same time as the release of their new EP, they are arguably one of the best bands in BC, and a fantastic band in western Canada. They have it all going for them; pure vocals delivered with vibrance and passion, incendiary guitar, impeccable banjo, and songs that are uplifting or lamenting, but some tell creepy and tragic tales of strange circumstance. It’s the kind of music you could spend the night dancing to, or set on repeat for that summer road trip.

Their most recent career achievement, Top 20 in the Peak Performance Project, will have them attending musical boot camp, completing challenges and showcasing their music this summer and fall, ultimately gunning for the $100,500 prize. Huge congratulations are due for already making the cut from hundred of submissions, giving Redgy Blackout the recognition they deserve so well. In the meantime though, they will be appearing throughout BC and Alberta playing the Harrison Festival for the Arts, alongside the Kaslo Jazz Etc Festival at the Kaslo Hotel, CBC’s outdoor Plaza stage and touring between!. Get ready for a summer of Redgy Blackout!

The duo’s musical vision came together with their 2009 debut The Leap, and in 2010 they recorded an EP, entitled Meet You On The Other Side with the popular upbeat track “Like Penguins Do”. These days Redgy Blackout are producing their best material yet, bringing a united focus and dedication to the music they create, and collaborating with top notch musicians. Their third recording, a self-titled EP, will be released officially July 15, 2011, and was produced by Elisa Pangsaeng, mixed by Tom Dobrzanski (Said The Whale, The Zolas) and recorded at Vertical and Blue Wave Studios in Vancouver. In exchange for studio time, members of the band got together to help build a new studio for Dobrzanski.

“Like Penguins Do by Redgy Blackout is definitely a fun summer track; I mainly listen to it for the kazoo. Oh yes. There’s a strikingly hip kazoo line happening there. Jam that.”

Meet Buckman Coe. He’s a guitar weilding force of peace, love and music, and he’s releasing his message to the world, literally by the mountain’s feet, from his current home in Vancouver. By The Mountain’s Feet, the new album, is a collection of songs that creates a feeling normally reserved by your favorite music festival; conscious roots rock that feels as good as the sun beating down on your face. The lead single “Not So Farfetched” stands out with its message; ‘there’s only one moment to be living in’, delivered with pure sweet vocals on top of groovy guitar and a tribal pulse, as does “Paranoia”, the ethereal, driving rock song with a vaguely Spanish bent. The pedal steel haunts “Leaving Samsara”, while the tambourine and harmonica brighten the upbeat and cheeky “Honey Child”. “The Devil’s In You” has a groove that brings out a little electricity, while “Rest” and “Not So Farfetched” smooth it out, returning the listener to that feet in the creek, relaxed summer vibe. By The Mountain’s Feet was produced by Jason Kechely and recorded at Profile Sound and The Factory, mixed by Chon and Jason Kechely at Profile Sound, and mastered by Graemme Brown at Zen Mastering. We invite you to check out the sounds this summer!

DOWNLOAD “Not So Farfetched” from By The Mountain’s Feet

“If you enjoy the laid-back likes of Ben Harper and Jack Johnson, odds are good that you’re going to love this unrelentingly positive, completely accomplished triumph.”

Mike Usinger, The Georgia Straight

From groovy solo ditties to a good romp with a full band, Buckman Coe has blossomed into more than your average performer. Some toss around names like Jeff Buckley, Michael Franti and Neil Young seeking points of comparison, but Buckman Coe is more than the sum of his influences, and the musician slash yoga instructor is as interested in the health of the global consciousness and respect for the planet as he is a rippin’ guitar riff. His songs are progressive and contemporary, and convey an appreciation for life that’s seldom expressed with such genuineness and depth.

Buckman Coe released his first recording Latest Waking in October 2009, drawing on his experiences while in Colorado studying eco-psychology and counseling, and singing in a funk jam band, as well as his time back in Canada working as a yogi, mentor, and playing world fusion band Red Light Monastery. He’s since appeared at Burning Man, Recompression in San Francisco, various In The House Festival shows and Komasket Music Festival in BC, among countless other shows. With the release of “By The Mountains Feet” Buckman Coe will be heard on stage at the Oregon Country Fair, again at Burning Man, the Towards Eden Festival, Vancouver Fringe Fest (with a production of Siddhartha) and across western Canada on his release tour. He’s a wandering soul, having been born in the UK, growing up in Edmonton, AB, and living in the US for periods of time before relocating to Vancouver, BC. Regardless of location, wherever Buckman Coe plants his feet, the vibes of music, joy and peace resonate within the hearts of all who hear him.

Australia’s Country Rock n’ Roll Renegades Take Over Western Canada!

Famous in two hemispheres, The Re-Mains are returning to western Canada for their third Canadian tour, June through August 2011. Hailed by the Melbourne Age as “Australia’s best country rock band”, they were declared Honorary Canadians after their previous two forays, driving helter skelter from Vancouver to Montreal and back again, playing over 120 shows, including NXNE, NewMusic West, the Calgary Stampede and nine other Canadian festivals. Though The Re-Mains have a cherised relationship with Canada, their most highly regarded memory of touring Canada still may be Curtis, the Chevy conversion van that hauled them across the country.

“The Re-Mains are the bastard love child of Keith Richards and Bob Dylan”
Dave King, Sault Ste Marie

This time around, The Re-Mains will be traipsing around BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan playing festival stages and an array of venues, with a brief reach out to Winnipeg, unfortunately without Curtis. They’re touring a new album, “Courage…and shuffle the cards” and their familiar high-octane banjo and pedal steel sound will once again resound across the prairies. Sounding like a cross between the Blues Explosion and Neil Young, The Re-Mains kick up the crowd anywhere they go, they’re the band to get the party going with songs like “Tequila and Methadone” and sneak in some CanCon with “Darn Tootin’ In Saskachewan” or “Winnipeg Girls”.

Led by Mick Daley (vocals/guitar), The Re-Mains are made up of Leigh Ivin (guitar/banjo), Tom Jones (bass) and Allan Fisk (drums), though the band has bravely survived line-up changes, bouts of cancer, label demise, relentless touring, and even a near fatal mash up with a cow in the Northern Territory of Australia. They’ve been regarded as the hardest driving independent band in Australia for years, their history proves it, and their sound tells you they’ll power through all of it. In the words of their manifesto:

“At the coalface of country rock ‘n roll it is frequently dusty, dry and hard work. Beware of burrs in the boxer shorts, dirt in the engines, dust in the amps. You may take the stage uncertain why the endless miles, the untold broken strings. But take a break, have a sandwich, sleep it off. Steer your motor to the City Tavern in Peel Street, Tamworth. Have Mark Savic’s son pour you a beer. Sit back and regale yourself with the careening, shambolic strains of country rock ‘n roll. Johnny Cash. Jon Spencer. Johnny Green. Bob Dylan. Ragadoll. The Australian Beefweek Show. Tonchi. The Re-mains. Identify. Taste the stench of cordite and ozone. Drink of the fluids amber, pale, spirituous and sweet emanating from the bar. Breathe deep. That’s the sweat of country rock ‘n roll.”

“Prairie Balladeer” SCOTT COOK travels the country for most of the year, living out of his Caravan and playing shows for eager audiences throughout Canada and the US; everything from house concerts to music festival stages. He’s a true modern day folk singer; guitar or banjo in hand and baritone vocals reaching out to people with words on social protest, wandering the highways, fond memories, and anthemic sing-a-longs. A Scott Cook show will get you revved up, make you lament on life, and get up to dance and sing all in one. To be frankly honest, he’s one of the most stand up, fun loving folks you’ll meet in this life, should you take your opportunity to see a show. So, if you’re around western Canada this summer, take your opportunity! If you’re east of Winnipeg, don’t worry, you’ll get your chance this fall.
