Her latest effort, On The Bright Side is a richly textured and warm album, with just the right amount of flourish. “The Ways I Love You”, the first single/video from the album, is a resonant ballad that fills your heart with joy, while the next single “The Pursuit” is a marching anthem navigating the path of life. “Winter” is surprisingly more upbeat than the season typically is, and “Michelle” is an acoustic ride originally commissioned for the documentary “Return to Manomin” by Michelle Derosier. On The Bright Sidewas recorded at Blais’ family cabin in northern Ontario, where she spent summers as a kid, and was engineered and produced by her percussionist Josh Turnbull, before being turned over to Jeff Elliot at Fedge Studios for mastering in Toronto.

Faye Blais is a Canadian indie-folk artist whose songwriting personality is showcased beautifully through her talents on acoustic and electric guitars, and keys. Detailed as “continuing the thread started by Joni, picked up by Ani and fashioned by Feist”, Faye’s soulful and dynamic vocals are the perfect match for her musical style. At least that’s the technical way to put it. But when you get to know Faye’s style, you’ll realise that this little sun-chasing songbird is irresistable if even for the twinkle in her eyes and her light emitting smile. The message in her music is clear, chase your dreams, live your life in love and peace.

The veggie oil van is about to hit the road again with Fish & Bird! The ferocious fivesome are playing a handful of shows in British Columbia and Alberta before heading out to a slew of amazing summer festivals, including Winnipeg Folk Festival in early July and Folk On The Rocks in Yellowknife. They kicked off the spring with some sold out shows in BC, including an opening slot with Spirit of the West at Vancouver’s premiere music venue, The Commodore Ballroom. On the horizon for the band is a trip throughout the eastern half of Canada including Ontario and the Maritimes, before heading stateside for a few shows. Stay tuned for more!

Fish & Bird are continuing on a high that started with the release of their third album Every Whisper Is A Shout Across The Void, released last April. The album has won them many new fans and the recognition of tastemakers in Canada, the UK, Europe, and the US, While they haven’t yet toured extensively outside their home country, plans are underway for just that, and the band is excited to break new frontiers. It was less than a year ago that Our Ghosts Will Fill These Walls came out, but I’ve said it before about Jesse Dee and Jacquie B, (and Matt Blackie!) they just never stop! They’re prolific and passionate musicians, partly due to the fact that they tour more than half the year. With the addition of a new permanent band member the creatives juices got flowing, and the trio set to recording an entirely new album in a short amount of time in January, just before taking off on another tour that took them from Alberta up through the Yukon and Alaska! Now, as they embark on the next set of tour dates across western Canada, there is a record to release amid the travel! Officially releasing June 8th, with a big celebration in Edmonton, Picture The Ocean’s self titled debut is about to hit you!

SNEAK PEEK of “PICTURE THE OCEAN”

The forthcoming self titled release, Picture the Ocean, is a collection of songs and stories which have developed in the last year of hard touring together as a trio. Right from its inception to the recording process at Sound Extractor Studios in Edmonton, AB, it is a truly unique take on rock music that will leave you wondering where on earth this band came from. Picture The Ocean takes the styles displayed on Jesse and Jacquie’s previous releases, and firms them up into a more consistent sound, harnessing the rock vein more than before. Replete with bright glistening guitar sounds, those signature Jesse and Jacquie harmonies, and expert stops and fills from Matt Blackie, the album draws influence from many of today’s contemporaries while remaining it’s own beast. Erewhon is a true indie rock song, Being Me adds a little swing to it’s anthemic feel, and Scars has that summertime happy vibe, to describe a few. It’s a catchy brand of alt-pop and roots-rock; gritty and electric, yet soulful and harmonious.

Imagine that David Lynch and Nick Cave had a hillbilly baby, that yodeled…or Tom Waits meets Elvis at Woody Guthrie’s hobo junction.He’s an adventure seeker, living life without fear. Starting from a rural Quebec upbringing, he’s played every major street corner across Canada and in New York, before graduating to full fledged touring musician complete with his band The Vipers. Petunia is simply an undiscovered Canadian treasure joining the greats from north of the 49th.

The Petunia & The Vipers release is a sumptuous collection of all that is Petunia and it’s been earning rave reviews. Redgy Blackout is the cream of the up and coming indie roots-rock artists. Like every other band, they write songs, they sing and play instruments, and they tour the nation, but Redgy Blackout stands apart in their passion, animation and energy. They’ve caught a lot of notice with their latest EP, and Singer and multi-instrumentalist Scott Perrie and guitar/banjo player Jeremy Breaks have been perfecting their collaborative craft since they met at an open jam in Vancouver, Perrie entering the music realm early through the theatre and his grandfathers ’61 Gibson J45, and Breaks through growing up in his father’s music store in Prince George. Their musical vision came together with their 2009 debut The Leap, and in 2010 they recorded an EP, entitled Meet You On The Other Side with the popular upbeat track “Like Penguins Do”. Their latest self titled EPwas released in July 2011, produced by Elisa Pangsaeng, mixed by Tom Dobrzanski (Said The Whale, The Zolas) and recorded at Vertical and Blue Wave Studios in Vancouver. In exchange for studio time, members of the band got together to help build a new studio for Dobrzanski. The EP has been getting glowing reviews, and is being played on radio across Canada, CBC and Galaxie Digital Radio.

Exciting times for Fish & Bird! The ferocious fivesome are completely tickled to play a show at Vancouver’s premiere music venue, The Commodore Ballroom, opening up the show for Spirit of the West, on St. Patrick’s Day Saturday! While they’re all together on the coast, they thought why not play a few more shows in BC, including a return to Victoria where they sold out completely in January, and left folks wanting! These shows come upon their return from their showcases at the Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis in late February. The band is happily settling in with new bass player Natalie Bohrn, who cut her teeth as a band member earlier this winter and brings a sturdy beat, flair and harmony to the band.

This March group of shows kicks off what promises to be an exciting year for Fish & Bird. They’ll be playing shows and festivals throughout the prairies, Ontario, and the Maritimes this summer, with a swing into the Northeastern US. Meet David Newberry in person, have a chat, and hear him on stage, and you mind might drift towards the likes of Elvis Costello, Waldo, maybe Descartes, Peter Parker, and Joel Plaskett (maybe that’s just me?). Mash the best of all of these together and that’s one heckuva guy, and that is the musician known affectionately by his friend’s as “Newbs”. David Newberry is releasing his sophomore album No One Will Remember You to the masses and if you’re lucky enough to be in the area’s he’s playing, you’re in for a dose of folk-rock finery.

Playing his official-release-full-band-extravaganza show in Vancouver on March 15th, he then heads out to Ontario on tour with his sister Sioux Newberry, who is also releasing an album. The ‘sibling rivalry’ tour will also see the Newberry’s share a rhythm section, full of old mates from their Ontario home. David Newberry will be making stops throughout Canada during 2012, so check by his website for dates, videos and more, often!

No One Will Remember You refuses to live up to it’s name (unless you understand irony). It’s a memorable collection of tunes, the kind of music that will stick in your brain and find you belting the lyrics without realizing it. The album leads out with a pedal steel moan, indicating you might be in for some country, but once the beat of “All Of The Apples In The Basket” kicks in you’re wrapped in folk-rock splendor. Pick up the guitar and strum and sing along. Grab an electric for the blistering “Rock Bottom”; a rock anthem with some shredding fiddle, and sway back and forth with the “No One Will Remember You” choir on the roots ballad title track. Recorded in the idyllic landscape of Mayne Island, BC, No One Will Remember You was engineered, produced and mixed by Adam Iredale-Gray (Fish & Bird), and mastered by Joby Baker at Baker Studios in Victoria, BC. It features members of the Deep Dark Woods, Fish & Bird, The Gruff and O’mally, among others. Officially releasing March 15th, 2012, on Vancouver’s Northern Electric label, this is David Newberry’s sophomore album, and will see him and the band touring throughout the country in the spring, summer and fall!

David Newberry injured his hand while working as an assistant carpenter, and picked up a guitar as a form of physiotherapy, sensibly nurturing his love for punk music. Not long after, a songwriter was born, ala Dylan or Springsteen, and Newberry began the journey of finding out what ‘folk’ might sound like. In his words, Newberry compares to the singer-songwriters of the 60′s, observing aspects of society and protesting injustice, all while rocking out with a rootsy, blue-collar vibe. In his spare time, David Newberry also produces NewbsRadio.com, with his pal Eric Newby. It’s a music-based website and podcast with commentary that goes out of its way to point out that even though nothing is new, that doesn’t mean it can’t be exciting.

Redgy Blackout is the cream of the up and coming indie roots-rock artists. Like every other band, they write songs, they sing and play instruments, and they tour the nation, but Redgy Blackout stands apart in their passion, and energy. With their latest EP released in July 2011, they are fast becoming one of the most popular bands in BC and western Canada, and the single “Bottom Of The Sea” is spinning on The Peak 100.5FM in Vancouver as well as the rest of the tracks being played on the radio/CBC across Canada. They have it all going for them; a roots-rock cabaret with vibrant and passionate vocals, incendiary guitar, impeccable banjo, maybe a little trumpet, and songs that are uplifting or lamenting, while some tell tragic tales of strange circumstance. It’s the kind of music you could spend the night dancing to, or set on repeat for that summer road trip.

2011 saw Redgy Blackout hit the stage at the Harrison Festival for the Arts, play alongside the Kaslo Jazz Etc Festival, and more in addition to touring between. In the fall they placed in the top 20 at the Peak Performance Project, a collaborative educational contest put on by 100.5FM The Peak and Music BC in Vancouver. As part of their PPP tasks they raised hundreds from the sale of “When You Were A Kid” for donation to the BC Childrens Hospital Foundation. The band has also played the Harmony Arts Festival, the Deraylor Festival, and a slew of shows throughout western Canada. They’ve had all three releases heard on community and campus radio across the nation as well as CBC, and have enjoyed nothing but positive reviews from the critics. Redgy Blackout is creating a buzz to compare with the pace of their beautiful music!

The trio of Jesse, Jacquie and Blackie will be officially named upon the release of their new album, which is currently being recorded. It’s true, these folks only stay in one place long enough to record a new full length album, before they take off on another epic journey, this time through Canada’s west and north. Winter 2012 sees them playing shows in BC, Alberta, and into the Yukon and Alaska in March. It’s a great service these musicians do for all us fans, extending their playing field to include the far corners of the country, making sure fabulous times are had by all.

Fish & Bird are Canada’s alt-folk force to be reckoned with and their latest album, Every Whisper is a Shout Across the Void, marks a major step forward for the band. Released in April 2011, the critically acclaimed and nominated album redefines the Fish & Bird experience once again. It pushes just the right amount of alt music into their folk base, creating a sound all their own that’s as familiar as it is new. They have weird vocal improv sections, they rock out in 11/8, sometimes it seems like they’re playing bluegrass, and they might make you cry.

The first time I heard Jeff Andrew play, it was from behind a closed door and I was quietly eavesdropping. I liked the song he was playing so much I asked him right away if he wanted to work together, and he agreed. Little did I know the rabbit hole I had fallen into, full of faeries, shadowy alleys and worn out old boots…

Jeff Andrew is a different breed of folk musician, aptly referring to his music as “folk noir”, with its boot-stompin’ grit, fantastical stories, and wailing banshee sound. He’s emerging from under a bridge somewhere in East Vancouver, to tour the country with latest release Hobo Postcards, his third recording and second full-length effort. Andrew will play from Vancouver to Winnipeg in November, having toured through Ontario after attending the OCFF Conference in Niagara Falls, and will return to the east again in the spring.

Jeff Andrew’s story is one of wild wonder; back alleys and dark shadows, highways and hauntings. His psyche translates into his music, and Andrew takes his cue from folk punk bands like The Devil Makes Three and Graveyard Train to make his shows as rowdy as possible. He frequently works straight from the floor, stomping his boots and belting like a born-again carnival barker. Pounding his guitar strings or chopping and sawing away at the fiddle while singing either solo or with a band, he never fails to impress and leaves audiences shaken, sweating and ready for more.

Shade Tree Records is now releasing Andrew’s second full-length album, Hobo Postcards. Containing tales of haunted hotels (“Prince George Hotel Room”), hard times on Skid Row (“The Wandering Dead”, “What’s Going On In The Alleyway?”) and love songs to the open road (“Please Let Me Sleep On Your Floor”), it melds into a unique take on folk, punk and Celtic music. Hobo Postcards was recorded in the basements and tunnels of East Vancouver with co-producer Corwin Fox (Wax Mannequin, Raghu Lokanathan), bass virtuoso Tobias Meis and ace percussionist Kenan Sungur. It marks a return to Andrew’s rock and roll roots with the addition of electric guitars and a full rhythm section, and features the legendary Stroh Violin, a rare, antiquated instrument with a resonator and a phonograph horn instead of a traditional wooden body, heard on tracks 2, 7 and 8.

The band is donating all proceeds from the sale of their brand new, heartfelt song “When You Were A Kid” to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, and needs your contribution!

Current proud to be a Top 20 contender in the Peak Performance Project, the band just released their new self-titled EP, and are fast becoming one of the most popular bands in BC and western Canada, with the single “Bottom Of The Sea” spinning on The Peak 100.5FM in Vancouver. They have it all going for them; a roots-rock cabaret with vibrant and passionate vocals, incendiary guitar, impeccable banjo, maybe a little trumpet, and songs that are uplifting or lamenting, while some tell tragic tales of strange circumstance. It’s the kind of music you could spend the night dancing to, or set on repeat for that summer road trip. Singer and multi-instrumentalist Scott Perrie and guitar/banjo player Jeremy Breaks have been perfecting their collaborative craft since they met at an open jam in Vancouver. Both came from musical backgrounds, Perrie through the theatre and his grandfathers ’61 Gibson J45, and Breaks through growing up in his father’s music store in Prince George. Their musical vision came together with their 2009 debut, and Redgy Blackout are now producing their best material yet with their new EP, bringing a united focus and dedication to the music they create, and collaborating with top notch musicians.

Bluesland, is an intense collection of rock, folk and country, soaked with an electric blues sound that gets deep into your pores. It was recorded ‘live off the floor’ in 3 days in April 2010 at Beta Sound Recorders in Edmonton, and marks a milestone in Bourne’s career, collaborating with his son Pat Bourne, who plays electric lead guitar on the album. It opens up with the retro rocky Deep Dark Woods, and wanders through to the ‘ballad with teeth;’ On The Sunny Side. The country punk two step Columbus Stockade Blues and a raw country blues rendition of Dylan’s Maggie’s Farm rock out against the jazzy Who’s Knockin?, while Daily Bread walks through the blues with a gospel request. The eight song recording is available for pre-sale at TrueNorthRecords.com, or at any of Bill Bourne’s live performances. In addition to Bill’s acoustic guitar and vocals, and his son’s lead, The Free Radio Band features Pa Joe on electric smooth jazz guitar (African Guitar Summit), Moses Gregg on bass (The Swiftys) and Miguel Ferrer on drums (Santiago, Chile). Bluesland was mixed by Joe Dunphy and mastered by Joao Carvalho at Joao Carvalho Mastering in Toronto.

Bill Bourne has soul. In everything the multiple award winner has accomplished over a 30+ year career, the common vein has always been his undeniable passion and dedication to his craft and his message. From world beat to blues, Cajun, to funk, flamenco to folk, Bill has crossed all boundaries, joining people in celebration and music with a message of togetherness and peace. A rocker at heart, Bill holds the ideals of the 60′s revolutionary music makers, the protesting punk rockers, the old country crooners, and the aboriginal music of nearly any culture, blending aspects of every sensibility into his own unique sound. From the release of his first album by Radio Canada International in 1982, Bill Bourne has toured the world either solo, or with such acts as Scotland’s Tannahill Weavers, Bourne & MacLeod, Tri-Continental, Eivor Palsdottir, Lester Quitzau, Madagascar Slim and Bop Ensemble. His music has charted across Europe and North America, and he took home a Danish Folk Music Award in 2006 with Eivor Palsdottir (producing and playing on the album), in addition to winning Juno Awards for the 1990 Bourne & MacLeod recording Dance and Celebrate, the 1993 compilation Saturday Night Blues and 2000′s Tri-Continental self titled recording. Bill continues to record, play and collaborate with an ever present passion, fervor and sense of peace, making him a respected and significant contributor to the Canadian music landscape.

The TEQUILA MOCKINGBIRD ORCHESTRA have recently created a lot of buzz.  Though they’ve been a popular underground gypsy-ska-roots-grass band for some time, they’ve just reached the cusp of something different.  They’re a bunch of completely unassuming guys, all truly genuine and the kind of people your grandmother refers to as “such nice boys”.  But put them up on stage and get the chemistry going and suddenly you’ve got a pulsing, rich sound, emanating into the wildly dancing crowd.  No joke.  I’ve seen it.  The boys of TMO are on the road this summer all over the damn place, from BC down the US west coast to California, to Manitoba, back to BC, back through the country all the way to Atlantic Canada, and down to Pennsylvania and Tennessee, back to Montreal and Toronto…. and so on and so forth.  These gypsies know how to move across the country, and you’d be silly not to go have them move YOU!

TMO delivers their brand of acoustic, high energy Gypsy-Ska-Roots-Grass with dedication and precision, keeping it exciting and generating dancing fans with every show. They’ve sold hundreds of albums at individual shows; 600 at Seattle’s FolkLife alone, and tend to always be that name you overhear someone saying “Did you see that band?” TMO attended the Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis, TN this past February and came away with several shows in areas of the US they’ve never played before, and a whole slew of new fans in the industry. Though they formed as band in British Columbia, and they have roots in both BC and Alberta, they tour often in the Pacific Northwest, one band member attends Berklee School of Music in Massachusetts, they’ve sold out shows in Montreal, and they bring out the party people in Toronto thanks to their appearances at two Buskers Festivals. 2011 surprisingly marks their first stops in Saskatoon and Winnipeg, where the band is sure to be as welcomed and enjoyed as anywhere else.

The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra released The Blanche Album in late 2009, and like true wandering gypsies, jiving with their eastern European, traditional and contemporary influences, they took the album on the road playing everything from sweaty dance clubs to sunny outdoor festival stages. TMO also actively donates their time and music to community events, fundraisers and awareness campaigns, as well as bringing fresh new bands in from the Pacific Northwest to Vancouver (or vice versa) to help expose them to new markets. Ian Griffiths (lead vox/accordion), Kurt Loewen (vox/guitar), Patrick McGonigle (violin), Peter Mynett (upright bass) and Paul Wolda (percussion) are a community oriented and ideological group, but really, they just want to make sure you have a fabulous time.

She’s a rambler, a gambler, a lover and a fighter; and the adventurous sounds of Sarah Burton lure you onto her path, rolling with the steady pace of a train down the tracks and rocking like your favorite juke joint on a Friday night. Her soulful voice tells life’s tales with beauty, strength and weariness, and an ever-so subtle bit of sarcasm! She released her first full length album Mayflower this year to the welcoming public, after having marked such successes as having her music in the film “Cabin Fever 2″, opening for pop sensation Kate Voegele at Toronto’s Opera House, and having her song “Then Run Away”, be named Best Folk Song by Toronto Exclusive magazine in 2009. Mayflower is a powerful collection of alt-folk with country and rock rhythms; its driving acoustic sound is apparent in “How Good You Are” and “Gravity”, while the steel and electric guitars make their mark on “If This is a Sin” and “What To Bring”. Themes of travel, luck and love affairs are dispersed amid the collection, ranging from edgy and independent, to vulnerable, sweet and romantic. Accompanying the Mayflower release is a VIDEO for the album’s single “How Good You Are”, thanks to a grant from Videofact, and a follow-up VIDEO for the track “Gravity” is to be released very soon! Oliver Swain is already a well known name in the North American folk music scene, and he eats, sleeps and breathes music, as is evident by his performance. With his pure, finely tuned vocals that have an astonishing range, and his undeniable skill behind a banjo or upright bass, Oliver grabs the attention of all who hear him, and holds it with his enormous sound and stature. He’s shone at the forefront of the WCMA nominated group Outlaw Social, held up the bottom end of The Bills, and did a stint with Louisiana’s popular Red Stick Ramblers. He’s won awards, supported many well known Canadian musicians, toured overseas with Juno winner Toni Childs, and spearheaded an effort to bring a folk festival back to his hometown of Victoria. Now, with his solo debut In A Big Machine, Oliver is wowing those who hear it with his stunning vocals, lulling banjo, and audacious upright bass, backed by the amazingly talented Big Machine band.

In A Big Machine is a beautiful collection of five tracks of Oliver’s original music, coupled with a few heavy hitting traditional numbers, and Oliver’s 120 year old goat skin banjo take on Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire”. The album takes the experimental folk sound Oliver is known for, and weaves a personal and touching tone into it, showing his emotive writing and varied vocal pallet. In A Big Machine was co-produced by Adrian Dolan (The Bills, Rankin Sisters, Chieftains) with Oliver at Marlborough Studios, and boasts a slew of appearances from his contemporaries such as Jeremy Penner (The Wailin’ Jenny’s), Emma Beaton (Joy Kills Sorrow), Adam Dobres and Emily Braden to name a few. Its being spun regularly on Canadian radio including the CBC and has hit the airwaves in the US and Australia as well. Big Machine has charted on several Canadian stations from Victoria to Toronto and back, and continues to be a folk favorite among DJ’s and the media alike.
